Name Photo On Birthday Cake
A 500K+ download creative app had grown over years of feature additions. It needed modern Android requirements, a cleaner dependency setup and a consistent design before it could expand into new content like memes and stickers.
My contribution
Modernized the codebase and shipped a full UI redesign across more than 15 screens. I migrated dependency injection from Koin to Hilt, moved Room from kapt to KSP, removed deprecated libraries (Anko, ThreeTenABP) and resolved Android 14+ policy issues that affect Play releases.

- Platform compliance: Rebuilt video export as a typed foreground service (mediaProcessing on Android 15+, dataSync on Android 10–14) with timeout handling. Restricted FileProvider access to specific folders and added Android 14 partial photo access (“Select more photos”) to the custom gallery.
- Architecture and build: Migrated Koin to Hilt, replaced kapt with KSP, moved date logic to java.time with desugaring, and switched modules from api to implementation. Existing user data stays compatible across the update.
- Reliability: Fixed crashes in the reminder and favourites lists. Fixed age calculation edge cases, including birthdays on 29 February and daylight-saving off-by-one errors, and ensured database inserts finish before a screen closes.
- UI/UX: Shipped a shared dark card design system with a new home grid, sticker packs, song and quote browsers, an age calculator with life stats, a birthday reminders flow, My Work, and share and delete screens. Native ads load only when online and stay hidden until filled.
